A lovely patterned, medium size, 50 pound "lap" Dalmatian; Venus is still a puppy despite being of 12+ years old. She loves to have a ball rolled for her to romp after. This special lady is blessed with a very sweet disposition and such a lot of love to give which reflects in her name. That glow in her eyes is not camera flash, it is the inner glow of love and joy from her great big heart. This very laid back, couch potato is great with kids. She walks gently on her leash even with an 8 year old child. Venus is allowed to sleep with "her" child, gently licking her face before going to the foot of the bed for the night. She and her little girl would stay in bed all day if allowed. She also loves cuddling in mom's recliner as long as possible. Friendly and outgoing and safe to leave loose in the house; Venus has blended seamlessly into her foster household. She gets along with a cat, 2 ferrets, a lizard, two dogs, a husband and kids. Friendly and outgoing, no one is a stranger. New people are just more love! Her foster mom keeps her weight on the light side to ease her arthritis, despite the dedication this spotted love goddess shows for surfing counters. When people are eating, she becomes hovering Hooverhound lurking to pounce on any dropped crumb! The intensity of her gaze toward a loaded fork should cause it to bend! She loves to go for walks and play outside, but has enough hip and back problems to need some limits on those beloved adventures. A combination of Glucosamine and maintenance meds keep her life comfortable. Venus does sit on command, but is a bit rusty at such things as they really aren't needed to control her. Venus loves riding in the car, but needs help getting in and out. Stairs are a challenge for her due to balance problems, but she tackles them just the same. A bit hard of hearing, she has learned some hand cues to work around it. Her sight is a bit limited, but her nose knows the way! Venus is housebroken, but can't be expected to go for long periods of time without a pit stop. If you are compassionate, patient and understanding – perhaps a retired person or someone who works from home and could keep her on a comfortable schedule, Venus would be the ideal companion. This dog would repay the extra TLC and patience needed to comfort her age related problems with her gentle love. Venus has so much to share in these her golden years. Venus would bring both joy and the satisfaction of having helped such a deserving pet as you light each other's lives and fill the lonely place in both your hearts… even for a few short years. This is a courtesy post. This laidback girl would be a wonderful addition to any family who finds the love of a fabulous dog a finishing touch. This sweet medium sized gal of 53 pounds has survived a rough life so far at only 5 years old! Her last owner neglected her and ignored trimming her nails to the point that the nails grew back into her sensitive pads. Careful trimming and loving care have cured that misery now, but left her with the habit of walking a bit bowlegged. At the time she was rescued, Sadie Sue was missing 2/3's of her hair, due to untreated flea allergies. Safe and cared for in a foster home, Sadie's coat is partially recovered, it is still a bit thin on her back. Sadie has filled out and turned into a very breedy looking girl. Her lovely butterfly patterned ears set off one of the prettiest heads on our site. Such expressive eyes make her a hard to resist. Despite what she has been through, Sadie adjusts quickly to a new home. Her favorite thing in all the world is to be close to her foster family. She loves attention and being petted. But if they are busy, she isn't demanding or noisy. She knows simple commands but needs a little work on a leash to be perfect. She doesn't bother belongings or furniture and is trustworthy enough to be left to run loose in the house. Well housebroken; Sadie hasn't had a single accident. She gets along just fine with dogs her own size like her Dalmatian foster siblings. And unlike them, Sadie Sue hardly ever barks! She loves to ride in vehicles. Sadie is current on her shots, spayed, heartworm negative and had her teeth cleaned just after she was rescued. She does have a touch of prey instinct and CANNOT go to a home with CATS or LITTLE DOGS. She is cautious of strangers and hasn't been around kids at this home. And due to nearly being starved, she is protective of her food and should be fed away from other dogs. Occasionally, Sadie gets a bout of scratching, but her allergies can now be controlled by medicines when that happens. Sadie is being fostered in northern Indiana.

At 49 pounds; Clementine is a pretty, medium sized Dalmatian mix girl of about 3. She has big blue eyes that simply melt your heart. Her mellow, hound sounding bark or bay, expresses that a little hound has sneaked into her genetics. Clementine is not a big barker only using her voice to coax the other dogs to play. Moderately active, she is friendly with an outgoing personality and a great love of cuddling. Clementine came to Second Chances Dal Rescue as an emergency case from a shelter. Even though in pain and feeling so sick, this patient, gentle girl allowed the vet and techs to prod and poke around as they tried to decide how best to help her. Now totally recovered, Clementine is now in a loving foster home and ready to find her furever home! "Great dog and so sweet!" are how her fosters describe her. Clementine doesn't know many commands yet, only "No!" She works pretty well on a leash, leading at first before relaxing to match your speed. Currently in the works – learning patience while waiting for the food bowl. Clementine is also a collector of fine belongings, considering anything left laying on the floor gifts for her own stash. She is not possessive or a chewer, just a gatherer. So who is training who in this doggy style reverse psychology? Her fosters now keep things very picked up! She is not possessive or a chewer, just a collector. They are also working on her love of sleeping on beds. Having spent long weeks in recovery, Clementine is a Houndini when it comes to a crate! Even using a bungee cord, doesn't hamper her… 2 minutes flat without bending the crate rails or showing any sign of how she commits an escape. Their solution is to gate her off with their two dogs in the bedroom area of the house. Clementine gets along very well with her doggy siblings and hasn't shown much interest in the resident cats. There has been no opportunity to meet small children, but Clementine has been gentle with no aggression toward a petite 14 year old visitor.
Clementine loves riding in cars and especially looking out the window! Current on shots, spayed and housebroken; Clementine is being fostered in central Ohio. Interested in adopting, fostering or even donating? YOU can make a difference in the life of a homeless dog in so many ways. Many of the our dogs come into shelters needing expensive medical attention to help them. Our rescue is a volunteer group that depends on donations to help us help THEM! Nemo is a nicely patterned Dalmatian gentleman of 9 years. He needs a home that is as low key as he is, with a safe, soft place to lay his gentle head. Nemo absolutely loves soft things like the comfort couches or beds offer. A quiet home with adults would be best as the busy lifestyle of young children bothers him. Medium sized, this quiet soul has a laid back disposition and handles very well on a leash. He is such pleasant company to share a walk with. And Nemo is a sly older dog who drawn to every woman he meets, a regular ladies man! He knows "Sit" and "Shake" and is housebroken, crate trained and trustworthy enough to be left alone with belongings and furniture. He has no obvious bad habits and learns new things quickly. He has learned to use the doggie door, goes out does his business and scurries back in to his favorite "spot" on the couch. Nemo enjoys other dogs of all sizes and activity levels. He greets adults and children with friendliness; no one is a stranger for very long. He has so much to offer anyone who needs a loving, faithful friend to talk to. Nemo greets his foster mom with lots of vocalization: he "sings" and "talks" with joy! He appreciates rides in the car. Nemo is neutered and current on his shots. Due to past urinary stones and a touch of spinal stenosis, Nemo requires a low protein diet. The stenosis makes him a bit stiff, but a daily hour of exercise has greatly improved his outlook on life and loosened up his movement. This beautiful and very dignified guy needs someone compassionate and patient to draw him out of his shell and help him enjoy his golden years. At only 9, Nemo could brighten your life for several years. Each of our dogs – purebred or mixed is ready in their own special way to fetch joy and chase away loneliness as only canines can. All come from different situations with different needs. Offering a loving not only saves a homeless dog's life it enriches your own life with love and companionship.

NEW TO OUR RESCUE - Stubbs! This well mannered guy is a large purebred Dalmatian around 7 years old. He comes by his name because of something unique for a Dalmatian - a docked tail, which surprisingly looks good on him. This slight lack in his emotional barometer doesn't hamper his easy going, laid back disposition in the slightest! Stubbs never tries to jump up on people or get on furniture. He appears to be house broken and is crate trained. He is working on leash much better than when he first arrived less than a week ago. If he gets excited, but responds to a reprimand. He is smart and responding well to learning to sit using the clicker. His next command to learn is down.
Stubbs gets along well with other dogs. His foster's cat on the other hand is sure that this new arrival might be a serial cat killer and taking precautions... Currently, he is not left loose while his foster mom is out of the house. Stubbs is good with strangers, not at all bothered by people he doesn't know. He has no fear of car rides and is eager to board. He is current on shots and has been neutered. So far his only bad habit is an interest for wastebasket inspections. Besides a shortened wagger, he does have a fatty tumor on one of his sides. Such growths are harmless and benign and can be easily removed. Please stay tuned for further developments on this beautiful Dalmatian, he is being fostered in Ohio.

Meet Lady Bug! Such a face and pretty shape! Rescued on her last day in a Houston pound it was clear that her short life had been spent on a heavy chain with no attention, training, love, handling and very little food. Lady Bug needs a patient family who want to work with her. So far this loveable 4 year old has over come a lot of obstacles. Friendly and outgoing, she has filled out her large frame to 52 pounds. Lady Bug has adjusted to indoor life and its sounds – the television, washer, dryer and the electric can opener. She no longer flinches from raised hands and enjoys hugs now. Lady Bug enjoys playing with all kinds of toys and will empty the toy chest searching for her favorites. Lady Bug loves to be at someone's side at all times. Curling up with her foster mom in a shared favorite chair to watch TV, is a very special delight and… Lady cherishes sleeping in her foster mom's bed… She is well behaved around belongings, furniture and doesn't chew up things. Lady Bug is now functioning well in a family environment with several other dogs. She knows her name and comes when called. She is completely housebroken, has been spayed and done with her heartworm treatment. Lady Bug has learned to behave when left out with the other family canines. She enjoys greeting quests, likes kids and is not shy or afraid of strangers. She still gets excited yet and tends to jump up. Lady will still bark for reasons unknown: she will run to the car and bark to get inside. In the car, she will bark nonstop. Her foster mom doesn't know if she is barking at traffic or remembering a bad time in her life. Left alone, Lady will bark for a few minutes before settling down to wait quietly till someone returns. Her high prey drive makes her a doubtful choice around cats or small dogs. Lady can get still get rough while playing with both dogs and people. She still will counter surf looking for food and hasn't made much progress on leash training. Since she finished her heartworm treatment and confinement; Lady Bug has become active again and really enjoys running and chasing birds in the back yard.
Some time this month, she will be moved from Fort Worth, Texas to Ohio so a professional trainer can polish her skills. PLEASE help Lady Bug have a chance at a new life! Donations and sponsors are needed to cover the cost of her heartworm treatment and training.

This is a courtesy post. Okay, so I'm not spotted...is a nice set of dressy pinstripes in a classy tux and mittens so bad? I'm still waiting... since April 29, '08! Remember me, Jill? Such a lovely, big boned girl, good and solid and of the feline purrr-suasion! Not a single rib sticking out anywhere to spoil my sleek cuddliness! Due to human allergies, I am in need of a loving home for a wonderfully affectionate cat...me! Since Brother Jack passed on, I've been lonely. At 5 1/2 years, the warranties on most of my 9 lives are still good. Why adopt a boring dog when a wonderful cat like me is ready to warm your lap and keep your milk from going sour! That's J-I-L-L! When was the last time you heard a dog purr, hiss or spit or saw one catch a mouse, anyway! And no drooling or panting unless I'm really stressed. Don't let my Garfield imitation fool you, I really am a very loving girl who would gladly share my rocker with you. This is my mesmerization stare.... is it working? Repeat after me, "what a lovely pussycat to share my home." Can you feel your heart softening? I hope so, 'cause I really do need a home! I'm taking interviews for people with good homes to offer me. I promise not to be purrsnickety and I get along well with other cats. Sorry NO dogs! Please contact my secretary, Julie, at jkrussell4@aol.com or my number is 810-678-2365. I can be yours for an adoption fee of only $30.

Delilah is the nicest girl! Friendly and affectionate; she loves to be touched and petted. She doesn't appreciate nail trims but only moans, pants and squirms without being aggressive. Delilah takes treats gently and loves to fetch tennis balls. She is a purebred Dalmatian with a black and white pattern. The graying and ticking mixed through her lovely coat and bluish cast to her eyes place her age at around 12. Her current weight of 73 pounds makes her move a bit stiff till she warms up, but she can be quite playful in the tradition of older Dals. Her new diet will slim her down and help her regain mobility. Her physical found her in good shape with a strong heart, a few touches of arthritis and quite a few benign fatty tumors. Some of these were aspirated by the vet and yeast infections in her ears are being treated. Delilah tested negative for heartworm and is spayed. Nothing is known about Delilah's background or how she ended up in a shelter - pretty harsh treatment for an older pet. With a life expectancy of 16 years, Delilah could grace someone's life easily for another 4 years with just a little gentle care and love. Delilah is perfect for someone who doesn't want the long term commitment and need for training that a younger dog requires. Delilah's demands are simple: food, water and occasional vetting in return for steady loving companionship! Please consider letting her golden years bring a warm glow to your life! Not only would you be helping a very, very special dog, you could make some wonderful memories! Stay tuned for more updates and pictures as soon as they become available

Domino is a 5 year old purebred Dalmatian who is still a puppy at heart. A lovable large boy of 63 pounds; Domino is a high energy guy that tends to get very excited about playing. Friendly and outgoing, he can overdo things and be a bit pushy. Sadly, many nice young dogs end up in shelters due to owners who don't realize that like children, dogs need training! Taking Domino through a basic obedience class, would really benefit anyone considering adopting him. On leash Domino tends to pull and he will get up on furniture until asked to get down. While safe to leave loose in the house around belongings; he can't seem to resist tearing apart stuffed animals left within his reach. Domino gets along with other dogs very well, he is friendly and wants to play. He would be a good companion dog for a playful dog about his size. Due to his love of running and playing, Domino really needs a home that has a fenced in yard. Due to a lack of cats at his current home, it is not known how he is towards them. Domino is very friendly towards strangers and kids. But due to his excitable nature, will forget and jump up. So he would not be a good choice for a home with small children. Domino loves car rides. He is current on his shots and has been neutered. Domino has to be on a special diet to help him keep from forming stones in his urinary tract. House broken, he really can't go beyond 5 hours without a potty break, due to having had urinary stones in the past. Domino is being fostered in Ohio.

Such a happy face! Meet Dozer, the incredible shrinking Dalmatian! Beautifully marked, only 6 years old; this pleasant Dalmatian, is a sad victim of over feeding. Painfully obese, at a super-size of 125 pounds when rescued, he has begun to shrink! Dozer is the sweetest, loving soul even though his size makes him seem a much older dog, right now.
A charmer, Dozer loves everyone and everything in his path. His tail wags constantly as he shadows his foster mom everywhere. He is the poster child for contentment when allowed to lie with his big head resting on her leg or foot. Due to his size, he can't join his four doggie siblings at the park for a romp until he can keep up. Dozer has bonded with one of his foster siblings, Sunny, a tiny 40 pounder, giving her loving licks at every opportunity. This week, May 22, Dozer actually began running to chase his girlfriend Sunny around the back yard! He is beginning to feel light enough to play a little a little game of tug and try to steal Frisbees and give kisses. He isn't the least bit aggressive around other dogs, quickly backing off with his tail wagging if someone growls. He will howl a bit when left alone and would be happiest with a companion dog to keep him company. Or a stay at home adult...? Dozer is housebroken and well behaved when riding in the car – riding puts him to sleep! But getting in a car is very difficult due to his size requiring two strong peoples to lift, he is afraid of any kind of ramp. Due to the weight, Dozer was a very heavy breather/snorer when sleeping, but even his minor weight loss is making his breathing easier. He walks very well on a combination of leash and harness without pulling and she happily reports she keeps having to tighten the harness! His foster mom has discovered that this is a Dozer will do a social flop stop purely intended to draw people needing to pet a pretty dog! Dozer likes ALL people - pausing when he meets them to accept hugs. He still refuses to join the pack for a romp at the park, flopping down mulelike. Due to his weight, he is difficult to lift for even two people. When his foster mom is away, he does very well left in one room with only a baby gate. When she's home; Dozer wanders loose contentedly without incident. Daily walks, a reduction diet and a loving person to follow around is helping this pleasant dog regain his dignity, movement and the joy of play. He is current on shots and neutered. He is being fostered in the Fort Wayne, IN area.

Milady is a medium sized, 47 pound, 1 year old Dalmatian with a beautiful shape and rich pattern of spots. She was finally surrendered after many citations for neglect and abuse, April 21, 2008. This poor sweet soul was forced to survive the winter without even a dog house until one was donated early this spring! Milady has wonderful triangle spots beneath each her bright eyes, her habit of cocking her head and perking her ears give her the effect of a sad clown. An odd "L" kink at the tip of her tail is from an old break or is an indicator that she is a blue blooded lady! Milady was quite a barker when she arrived in her foster home due to having spent her life tied outside. Loving attention and discipline have calmed that down as she adjusts to the comforts of the inside world. She will still bark, but more in a talkative manner. Her foster family is easing her over being hand shy. Things have been thrown at her and she has been hit about the head, judging from her reactions to such motions. What a way to raise a puppy! Active without being hyper; Milady has a sweet, friendly, outgoing personality despite her sad history. Chained out 24/7; she has never had a real puppyhood or positive interaction with people or other dogs till entering rescue. She is doing very well at learning how to play nice with her five doggy siblings. Milady does very well with dogs her own size or bigger. Due her immaturity and lack of social skills - small dogs and cats do seem to bring out the prey instinct in her at this stage of her life! SO she SHOULD NOT GO to a home with SMALL DOGS or CATS! Milady tends to be submissive without any real aggression, but she can get carried away due to her age. Commands backed up with a spray bottle and pack interaction are helping a lot. Milady is very loving with her foster mom's 6 year old daughter. She will bark a little at strangers, but hasn't shown aggression towards anyone. Eager to please, she is grateful for a chance at life. She has adapted to crate training and housebreaking quickly. She loves her crate, sleeping very soundly in its safeness. Milady doesn't always learn the first time, but she tries SO hard! Milady understands the word "Potty," but if she gets to playing outside, gets distracted and forgets to go. She needs reminders and watching for a few more weeks. This sweet little girl has mastered so many social skills and come such a long way! She has mastered: "No," "Potty," "Bedtime," "Good Girl," "No Bite," "No Bark/Quiet!" Still in the works are "Sit" and "Stay Down." Milady doesn't counter surf or chew on belongings. She will get on the furniture sometimes and has indulged in one panty raid….to tease her little human sister. Milady loves kisses and hugs – any kind of touching! She returns attention with licking kisses that can turn into nibbles if not reminded. Milady just discovered the joy of snuggling in her foster mom's bed with a good belly rub included. This sweet, young Dalmatian would do well in a family home with kids. She might do better getting the attention of being an only dog. Due to her energy in play, a companion dog would need to be no older than 5 or 6. Milady is being fostered in Northern Indiana. A caring director proved to be Violet's angel in an overcrowded shelter. Hesitant at first, when meeting strangers she may yelp when touched unexpectedly. Quite headshy at first, it is apparent that she has been abused. This frightened girl has turned out to be a gentle, responsive 6 year old who wants a lot of attention once she gets to know you. This shy, friendly lady is medium sized at only 50 pounds. Violet is beautifully proportioned, with nice markings and great soulful eyes. She still believes enough in people to have the confidence to overcome her fears. Gentle TLC is helping her come around. Dalmatians are an accepting breed and their confidence blooms with only a little love, patience and compassion. Violet may have lost her home, but not her ability to trust. Once she gets to know you, Violet relaxes and her true personality come thru – she's a lovesponge that craves all the attention she can get! Her foster mom, calls Violet as "a Velcro dog" due to her clingy ways. She will bark if left alone, as she wants to be with people or dogs. Pixie, one of Violet's foster siblings who is not thrilled over new dogs, snapped at Violet when she got too close to her crate. Bravely, to prove she's no shrinking posie, Violet barked at Pixie!
Violet knows her name, understands "Sit," and that a spray bottle filled with water means "Stop!" and "No!" She will pull a little on leash. Violet does not like being crated at this point and barks to be let out of it. She has been good about both furniture and belongings so far without chewing or destroying anything. Violet gets on furniture only when invited. A moderately active dog, she gets along with other dogs very well. Violet barks at the cats and would probably chase them given the chance. She hasn't met any children so we aren't sure how she is around them. Violet rides well in the car. She is being fostered along with Julius in western Pennsylvania.

NEW ARRIVAL – Update 5-28-08: Found tied to the front door of a vet clinic; Julius is a beautiful purebred 5 year old Dalmatian. A light spot pattern covers his beautiful well muscled shape. At 65 pounds, he is a large boy who could stand to add a few pounds. Julius has a very soft coat that he loves to have petted…almost as much as he loves belly rubs! His personality shines out of his pleasant, confident eyes which are outlined with mascara patterns. His is a very happy, friendly personality as his photos show, note the windmill rotor tail! Moderately active, he is learning to get along with most of his five canine foster siblings. Julius knows "Sit," "No," and comes by name when called. He doesn't get up on furniture and hasn't chewed or ruined any belongings. He enters his crate willingly and rides well in the car. Julius likes strangers, but is too big for little kids. He wiggles through people legs from behind and tries to give bear hugs, which would tumble small children. Julius loves the outdoors and is enjoying exploring the yard. He does chase squirrels and loves watching birds fly by overhead. Julius does pull when on leash and will counter surf if not watched, both habits that need some work. He has also shown some interest in chasing cats. Exactly what his thoughts on cats are…needs further investigation. Julius has an old injury to his right back leg and stands without putting weight on it. His fosters find that Tramadol helps ease discomfort and stiffness. Heartworm positive, Julius starts heartworm treatment on Monday. He shares the same west Pennsylvania home that is fostering Violet, another rescue from SCDR. Please apply to be put on a waiting list when Julius finishes his treatment. Donations are appreciated to help with the vet bills for this expensive treatment. WATCH THIS SPOT! Morton is a large purebred Dalmatian about 4 years old with a nice pattern of spots. This shelter photo is the only photo of him so far from early May. It appears that Morton broke the tie out he was originally hooked to and was found wandering in the country. Left waiting at the shelter, Morton's owner never bothered to look for him. Taken into rescue, he is now in foster care on a north east Ohio farm while he waits for a new forever home. Morton is very good with other dogs and works well on a leash. This funny, friendly guy can't wait to be loved and taught new tricks. Because he is a stray he was just recently neutered and is probably now up to date on his shots, too. Please consider this pretty guy with the sunburned nose as a furrever addition to your life. Stay tuned for updates as he settles into foster care. |
