Happy Spring!! Finally it looks like Spring is here along with warmer temperatures and sunshine!
March was a very busy month for us with a lot of great exposure within the Central Ohio area. We had a wonderful success with the 101 Dalmatians Musical when it came to Columbus. We were featured in several print media, were interviewed by 3 of the 4 local TV stations and Lacy even made it into Columbus Monthly! We had a table set up in the theater for each performance and we raised almost $700 from donations alone! And, thanks to Flat Iron and Andrew Worth, we raised another $300 through the sale of the Dalmatian themed desserts! Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped out, it truly was a wonderful week!

At the end of the month we also attended the Columbus Pet Expo. This was an exciting event simply because the rescue community’s boycott of the Expo unless Petland was removed as a sponsor was a success! About a week before the Expo, Petland withdrew its sponsorship due to all of the negative publicity. So we attended the event for all three days, thanks to the MARS corporation who sponsored our booth. We had several of our adoptable Dalmatians there and lots of our volunteers and past adopters came out to support us. Thank you again for all of your efforts, without you we wouldn’t be able to continue to rescue all of the unwanted Dalmatians out there!
I hope you enjoy this month’s newsletter and remember – if there is anything you would like to see in future newsletters, just let us know

Foster Dog “Spotlight”
Autumn
No, Autumn isn’t a Dalmatian but…..we were pulling a Dalmatian from a shelter in Ashtabula and Autumn was there, very pregnant with no one to rescue her. We couldn’t let her be euthanized so we pulled her along with the Dalmatian and shortly after arriving at her foster home she gave birth to 11 puppies. In addition to whelping and feeding 11 puppies, Autumn was also heartworm positive.
Autumn has now completed her heartworm treatment and has been spayed so she is ready for her forever home! She is a young active girl, part Boxer so she has many of the same energy demands of a Dalmatian.
Check out her full bio on our website and let’s get this girl a home!!

Pet Obesity
Just as human obesity is on the rise, so is obesity in our pets. Often in rescue we take in dogs who are emaciated or too thin, it is rare we see dogs who are overweight. However, this month we are taking in Jazzy who is grossly overweight. This poor girl is so uncomfortable due to the excess weight – we are going to help her lose the weight and start feeling great!
According to the Association for the Prevention of Pet Obesity, an estimated 51.5% of the dogs and cats in the United States are overweight or obese.
How do you determine if your dog is overweight or obese?
Contrary to what many people think, you should be able to see a waist on your dog!
You can use the following Body Condition Scoring chart to help determine if your pooch is carrying too many pounds.

Why should you be concerned with your pet’s weight?
Just like in people, there are health risks with our pets being overweight:
- Osteoarthritis (it is harder on the joints to carry all of the extra weight)
- Type 2 Diabetes or Insulin Resistance
- Respiratory Disorders
- High Blood Pressure
- Heart Disease
- Many forms of Cancer
Calories are the Key
For most dogs who are kept indoors and receive 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day, these are the average caloric needs:
50 pound dog 700-900 Calories
Typical number of calories in common dog treats:
1 Large Dentabone 300 calories
1 Regular JumBone 560 calories
1 Snausage 25 calories
1 Jerky Treat 21 calories
1 Large Milkbone biscuit 115 calories
1 Grillin Bites 30 calories
How to shed the pounds?
First, make sure you check with your vet and have a complete physical done on your dog. Rule out any medical causes for the excess weight (like Thyroid Disease or Cushings). Then, it is a simple matter of activity and monitoring food intake.
When you talk your dog for a walk, is it a leisurely stroll? If so, kick it up a notch and go at a faster pace.
If you free feed, change that immediately by measuring the quantity of food and feeding smaller meals frequently if possible
Consider switching to a diet food but read the serving information – it will be different than what you were feeding!
Substitute veggies instead of store bought treats (just check the Purine guide to make sure the food isn’t high in Purines)

Alumni Updates - Bert and Ernie
Bert and Ernie (a long haired Dalmatian now named Becket) were rescued from a shelter in Waco, TX. They were both two of the best Dalmatians I have met! They had wonderful temperaments, they both smile and they both stole my heart!! They both auditioned for the 101 Dalmatian Musical and they both passed however, the concern was that Ernie didn’t look like the “typical” Dalmatian with his long hair so only Bert made it into the show. Bert has toured with the show since its inception and has several BFF’s on tour including Jada (another SCDR rescue). He will be coming back to us at the end of the tour to be adopted out. But, don’t worry, despite his brothers fame, Ernie has found a forever home and he is enjoying his new life!
Becket’s Mom Jeri: “We fell in love with Becket’s exotic beauty – and were fortunate enough to get one of the best dogs we’ve ever had. Between us, we’ve had many dogs but Becket stands at the top of the pyramid – a GREAT ambassador for his breed.
Everyone who sees Becket wants to meet him, look at him, and touch him. Fortunately, Becket wants to meet them, too. He loves every dog, and every human he meets – and oh, yeah – he loves kittycats, too.
For public events – 5K runs, Agility events and the like, Clay likes to wear a Second Chances T-Shirt, so everyone knows where our beautiful boy came from. People tell us Becket’s a lucky dog to have landed here, but WE know that WE are the lucky ones. He rings our chimes.”
If you want to see more pictures of Becket, check out his
