Murphy gets more PR!
Check out the bags of Purina Dog Chow that are on the shelves now. There is a picture of a Dalmatian on the bag and it is SCDR’s very own Murphy! Also known as Rascal from the 101 Dalmatians Musical, he is not only on the bag but inside there is a CD that has his story of how he was rescued by SCDR and found his way to fame on Broadway!

Happy June everyone! The year is almost half way over and to date, we have rescued 42 dogs. Unfortunately the economy is still taking its toll and a lot of people are still abandoning their dogs because they can not afford to care for them or they are losing their homes. We are continually in need of foster homes, unfortunately even though our seasoned foster homes need a deserved break, there is no break to the number of Dalmatians who are in need of assistance. So, if you have ever thought about fostering or know someone who would like to foster, please contact us! We try to make it as easy as possible, we provide all of the medical care and the only cost to our foster homes is providing the dog food. However, we can help with that too if needed! You will get so much reward from helping a Dalmatian in need and knowing that YOU helped to save a life!
I also have some good news on a personal level. As many of you know, I am originally from Columbus, OH and had to transfer to Dallas, TX 4 years ago for my job. Luckily, I have just accepted a new position and will now be transferring to Northern Virginia! I am very excited to be leaving Texas and heading back closer to home, friends, family and rescue volunteers. It will be a busy next few months as I try to sell my house here, buy a new house in Virginia and move across the country with my four Dalmatians (Kinsey, Cleo, Lewis and Bert). Hopefully things will continue to run smoothly during this transition thanks to the awesome dedication of Shelley, Sherie, Tami and Beckie but if things are a little slow, please bear with us!
Have a wonderful summer!

Foster Dog “Spotlight” – Lyndsi

Lyndsi is a 1 year old, medium build (50#), female, spayed Pointer mix. She is a good girl that loves everyone she meets. She is good with other dogs, but cats are unknown at this time. Lyndsi has no bad habits. She is housebroken (uses the doggie door) and she is respectful of furniture and other peoples belongings. Her foster mom is currently working with Lyndsi on walking with a leash. Pointers, like Dalmatians, tend to have a lot of energy so she may be happiest with an active family that can give her lots of exercise.
Check out her full bio on our website and let’s get this girl a home!!

Summer Safety Tips
Summer months mean lots of time spent outside, picnics, and BBQ’s but we need to remember some safety tips to keep our pets safe too! Bark Busters Home Dog Training has these tips, especially helpful for the upcoming July 4th Holiday:
- If you are going to a fireworks display, leave your dog at home. Comfortable surroundings for him/her will make him/her more comfortable
- Do not leave dogs outside, unattended during fireworks. Dog’s sense of hearing is four times more sensitive than humans’. The loud noises and flashes of light can scare them which could create the instinct to try to get out of the yard to escape from the noise
- If your dog is destructive when frightened, consider putting them in their crate for the evening or keep them in a room where they can not injure themselves and remove items they may destroy
- Create a safe place for your dog where he/she feels safe and secure
- Turn on a radio or TV to provide noise to distract your dog from the loud noises of the fireworks
- Try to stay home during the majority of fireworks if possible
- Contact your veterinarian about giving your dog a mild sedative if appropriate
- Keep your dog away from doors – under significant stress they are more likely to dart out the door or get lost.
- Never leave your dog in the car during the summer months. Even with a partially opened window, the temperatures escalate rapidly and there is not enough air flow to supply sufficient fresh air. This is also a prime opportunity for your pet to be stolen
- Always keep proper identification securely fastened to your dogs collar. Make sure your phone number is on an ID tag, make sure your pet is microchipped and the microchip is registered
- When dogs are outside make sure they have access to water and shade. Never leave your dog outside unattended for long periods of time
- Keep your dog on Heartworm preventative and Flea prevention since the summer months are prime times for parasites, fleas, ticks and mosquitoes to strike
With some common sense tips and a little planning, your dog can enjoy the summer months along with the rest of the family!

Alumni Updates – Poco
For those of you who are part of our Alumni Yahoo group you are familiar with the tremendous progress that Poco has made since being rescued and going to her forever home. She is such a great success story that we wanted to feature her in our Alumni Spotlight. Poco is an example of rescue at its finest and stories like hers are the inspiration for why we do what we do!
Poco came into rescue as a stray who was found and taken to the shelter. Upon our initial assessment of Poco, she was very timid, if you called her to you, or approached her, she would circle, or dart in the other direction, or drop to the floor and/or roll over. She would drop to the floor if frightened and seemed to be mostly afraid of the street, cars, riding in cars, loud noises and being outdoors at night as well has walking on a leash or having a leash put on her. She spent several weeks in a wonderful foster home (thank you Theresa and kids!) where she started to learn to trust. She was later adopted by Kim and made the long journey to Canada!

Here is what Poco-Roo’s mom Kim has to say about her progress: “Poco-Roo came to us terrified of everything; us, vehicles, walking on the sidewalks, loud voices, suddenly arm movements, etc.. I instantly began working with her. I hand fed her and then she had to start working for her food. We enrolled her in agility and flyball classes for confidence. She has attended over 10 agility and flyball tournaments to date, met over 2000 people, etc. for socialization. Today, we came home from a rescue walkathon fund raiser, where she was amongst HUNDREDS of people, walked for 5km in a crowd, entered a costume contest, had her picture taken for 2 different newspapers, etc.. She is thriving and shows something new and brave every day!! Tomorrow she will part of a public flyball demonstration with our club for the first time, where she will perform for the crowds with flyball and Puissance! YEAH POCO-ROO!!!”
Thank you Kim and family for giving this timid little girl a new leash on life!!
