It’s hard to believe that Summer is around the corner and we are almost half way through the year! We have had a busy month, all of the Dalmatians from the 101 Dalmatians Musical are now in their forever homes and so far they are adjusting well to the retired life.
This year continues to be a challenge as we have taken in some very severe medical rescues. This issue will focus on the Dalmatians who we have (and are currently) helping and highlight why fundraising and donations are so important. One of our members recently discovered that his company offers a matching program. Many corporations offer some kind of Matching Gifts Program in which the company will match the monetary donation of an employee to their specified charity. We are a 501(c)3 qualified tax exempt charitable organization so check with your employer to see if they offer something similar! Your contributions can be tax deductible.

Hero
For those who have seen our website or are on Facebook, you have already heard of Hero’s tale. He was found as a stray and taken to a shelter in Texas. He was limping and holding up his back leg so they took x-rays which revealed a fractured femur. Unfortunately, Hero sat in the shelter for 6 days before he was able to be released to rescue. SCDR picked him up and took him to the vet immediately to determine the severity of the injury and the best course of action. He was in surgery the next day, received several external and internal pins and is now recovering very nicely.

before after
He remains at the vet under supervision but as of this writing, he is putting weight on his leg and isn’t needing as much pain medicine
.
Despite all that he has been through, he has an extraordinarily sweet personality. Never once has he growled or not wanted someone to pet him. He loves to get attention and often spends the afternoons behind the desk with the vet staff! He also doesn’t realize he has just had major surgery – he bops around and has been known to escape from his run if given the chance!
Total Cost to date: $2200
Recovery Time: 2 months
Helping a Sweet Boy walk again: Priceless!
Thank you to everyone who has donated to Hero’s fund – we have raised half of the money to cover the cost of his surgery!!

Gabby

Gabby is a sweet 2 year old whose owners dumped her at the shelter. We couldn’t figure out why because she is the sweetest, most loving, entertaining petite little girl! Then we discovered she has not one but two bad knees. She has a luxating patella in both back legs. This means that when she plays or exercises her knee caps slip out of place becoming dislocated and painful to her. She had surgery on 1/7/2010 to fix both knees. Unfortunately the surgery in Gabby’s right leg did not take and she had to have that knee operated on AGAIN (approximately one month after the initial surgery). This poor little girl was such a trooper and she spent approximately 4 months at the rehabilitation facility (thank you Healthy Pets of Central Ohio). She was finally able to go to her forever home on April 8th and she is thrilled to be able to run and play and resume normal activities. She is now pain free with two healthy, sturdy knees!

In this photo, Gabby is doing her physical therapy on the underwater treadmill!
Total Cost: $2372 |

All of the Heartworm Positive Dalmatians: Mongo, Marty, Harper, Riley, Tyler and Mandee
One of our previous issues covered the topic of Heartworm Disease in dogs. We have already rescued 6 heartworm positive Dalmatians this year. Luckily, 3 made it through treatment with very little complication however, 2 of them (Tyler and Mandee) are still undergoing treatment and both have had some major complications during treatment.
Tyler was rescued from a shelter in TN and came into rescue on 1/27/2010. When Tyler came into rescue he was underweight and had a large external growth on his leg among other issues. We have taken a triage approach with Tyler. We treated the most urgent items (the growths) first and then allowed him to gain enough weight and strength to start the heartworm treatment. Tyler is doing well now, however, due to a severe reaction during the treatment, he will require a longer series of the treatment to minimize further complications. We are hopeful that he will be ready to go to his forever home by the end of July. Total Spent to date: $1125, he still has two remaining heartworm injections.
 Tyler
Mandee is a young, energetic girl whose previous owners did not keep her on heartworm prevention because they did not like putting chemicals in her system and they were giving her a “natural” heartworm preventative (According to the American Heartworm Association there are no natural remedies for Heartworm prevention that truly work). Unfortunately, once we got Mandee into rescue, she tested positive for heartworms. Shortly after the first injection of the treatment, it is believed that she suffered a stroke. Her head is tilted to the side, she lost all balance and coordination and an ear infection was ruled out. She has improved greatly but is still having some difficulty. This poor girl didn’t deserve to go through all of this at her young age. Total Spent to date: $670

Fundraising “Spotlight” – UPDATED DATES!!
SCDR is holding our very first On-line charity auction beginning in June. We will be auctioning off many items including SCDR apparel, Dalmatian themed items and several themed gift boxes.
We are asking for your help for donations, especially the gift boxes. Some of you may remember that we had a silent auction at our golf tournament a few years ago and all of the gift baskets were donated by our wonderfully creative volunteers! So, we come to you again to ask if you would be willing to donate a themed gift box (since we will be shipping all items) of your choice. Because this is an on-line auction, we will be mailing all items to the winning bidder.
Once you have your items assembled for your gift box, please take a picture of it, email that along with a list of the items and the retail value to Shelley at ssiefert@neo.rr.com. Please have your photo and list submitted to Shelley no later than May 20th. She will get everything posted on the eBay charity site and we will send out an official announcement with the dates of the auction. Once the auction is closed, we will e-mail you the shipping information for the winner of your gift box so you can send it to them. We will reimburse you the $14.50 flat rate shipping charge.
A few things to keep in mind:
Since this is an on-line auction, people from all over the country could be bidding on the items. So, if you include a gift card in your gift box try to make it from a national chain.
We recommend that all of your items (when laid flat) fit in a USPS Priority Mail Large flat rate shipping box. You can get these for free at the post office and they measure 12″x12″x5 1/2″ . If you wish to use a larger box, we will still reimburse up to $14.50 for the shipping.
The more state/city specific your gift box the less general appeal it may have, try to keep the theme one that will appeal to the masses, no matter where they live
no alcohol can be shipped in the gift box
So far we have received some great gift boxes:
Dog Themed Gift baskets; Week of No Cooking; Scrapbooking for Dog Lovers; Nostalgic Candy and Toys; BBQ gift basket; Embroidered Tote Bags; Florida Get-A-Way; SCDR items gift box
There is still time to submit yours!
